Essential Accessibility Review

I am the Chief Accessibility & Legal Officer at Esssential Accessibility. We provide our clients tremendous value because we offer a done-for-you “DFY” solution to web accessibility.

Below is how the framework for how we work with clients.

Contract

You sign up as a client for an annual, fixed fee contract.

This means there’s no extra or hidden fees and the commitment on your end is for a year or longer. It just depends what your approach is.

Many clients take the wait and see approach and then end up re-upping for multiple years. Others go for a multi-year upfront.

As you can imagine, price is dependent on multiple variables such as:

  • nature of the digital asset (website, app, etc.)
  • number of assets
  • frequency of audits and user testing
  • other customizations

Service

When you become a client of eSSENTIAL, you immediately have access to our automated scan tool and product suite where you can run scans on your website.

And, of course, we get to work as soon as possible on your manual audit and user testing.

A tremendous amount of skilled hours goes into auditing your website.  We use WCAG 2.1 AA as the standard for audits.

When auditing we’ll test your website using different devices and environments. As far as screen readers, we ensure compatibility with:

  • JAWS
  • VoiceOver
  • NVDA

For browsers:

  • Chrome
  • FireFox
  • Safari
  • Edge

We’ll also make sure your website is accessible on mobile devices (i.e., smart phones, tablets) as well.

Remediation

We take on remediation with a full-service technical support approach.

Most of the time, clients actually prefer only their in-house developers touch their code and to keep things simple, we stay on that continuum with all of our clients: we don’t touch your code.

Rather, we leave that to your development team or agency.

However, we provide full remediation guidance including example code in our manual audits and then we have our technical staff back that up with full support should anyone from your team have questions on how to best implement the accessibility fixes.

In short, we’re there with you.  Our audit recommendations and examples are highly illustrative of what changes need to be made and we make our tech team available to support your team while you make your website accessible.

Legal Support

We’ve also got the best legal support team led by myself.  We make support your team, your general counsel if you’ve received a demand letter.

Many clients come to us after having a received a demand letter or lawsuit and we’ll evaluate that demand letter / lawsuit to determine if the claims made are valid.  You’d be surprised how often they are not.

Eve Hill is one of the nation’s leading disability rights attorneys and is a former Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and we frequently work with her to assist clients.  Recently Eve has been on calls with me helping a client draft their internal accessibility policies.

Assistive Technology

Another extremely cool bonus to partnering with eSSENTIAL as your accessibility provider is we include an assistive technology that helps those with motor skills impairments use your website – or any website.

We’re working on a new demo video for it but, for now, the best description is its software that enables eye tracking to make website navigability easier.

This technology is completely free to download for your audience and can be used on any website.  There’s no catch or hidden anything – it’s just part of becoming an eSSENTIAL client.

This is a great example of how you can go above and beyond WCAG and make sure your digital offerings are even more inclusive.
